Liebster Award

Last week I was nominated for a Liebster Award. My nomination came from Amy who writes a heartwarming blog chronicling the adventures of herself and her young son. Her blog is called The Wandering Mum. Thank you, Amy.

The Liebster Award is an award for new, or up and coming bloggers. As a recipient of the Liebster Award, it is my task now to 'pay it forward' by nominating bloggers to pass the award on to. I also must answer a list of eleven questions posed by Amy and ask eleven questions in turn of my nominated bloggers. The idea is for you to get to know me and for me to get to know others in turn.

Amy's question and my answers:

1. How did you decide on the title of your blog, and what's it about?

David, the other half of 'The Travelling Lindfields', and I cycle a lot when we travel and the blog began life as a way to tell others about some of the great cycling paths we have discovered. David wanted to call it "Over 50's Cycling" - really! The man has no imagination. I wanted something a bit catchier and pretty soon our general travel adventures overtook the cycling guides so 'The Travelling Lindfields' was born. Given that we hardly ever seem to be at home it just seemed like a good fit.

2. Where does your blogging inspiration come from?

It is hard not to be inspired when you travel as much as we do. My problem is not lack of inspiration it is far too much of it. I have about a dozen draft posts in my head at any given time. Finding the time to put them on paper is the hard part.

3. Can you give 11 random facts about yourself?
  1. I'm not sure that I actually like travel. I don't do well under stress and travel can be very stressful. I also much prefer to sleep in my own bed than lots of strange hotels beds of varying quality.
  2. I get seasick, airsick and carsick, none of which makes travelling any easier.
  3. I am claustrophobic (think aeroplanes, jet-foils, even taxis) and David is frightened of heights. Between the two of us a lot of travel experiences can be a real challenge.
  4. I suffer appalling with jet-lag. Another reason I really shouldn't travel so much.
  5. I am the world's worst listener. That comes from having a husband who talks non-stop 24/7. I learnt to tune out all the noise years ago and now I have trouble tuning back in when I actually want to hear something. Don't get me wrong, I love David very much but if I tried to listen to everything he says we would have had an awful marriage.
  6. I think it is polite to learn a little bit of the language of any country you are visiting rather than just relying on everyone else learning to speak English. As a result, I can speak a few phrases of a phenomenal number of languages but haven't yet managed to master a single one - except English of course.
  7. I have the world's worst sense of direction - tricky, given that I am usually the navigator. GPS's have transformed my life.
  8. I don't think I will ever understand how the International Date Line works. How can you possibly arrive somewhere before you left - it just seems so weird?
  9. I think aeroplanes are held up by magic and helicopters - well I just don't want to think about how they manage to stay up.
  10. I have an irrational fear of losing David when we are overseas. For that reason, I hardly ever let him out of my sight.
  11. David says 'I never let the facts stand in the way of a good story'. Perhaps he's right, but I would never admit it.
4. What is your favourite country, city or place you have visited?

Without a doubt, it was Egypt, especially Luxor and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. David and I went there with, Andrew, one of our sons. Andrew and I loved every minute. I'm not sure David was that impressed. He thought the whole of Egypt, the pyramids included, was in need of a good rebuild - lol.

5. If money was no object, briefly describe the holiday you would take?

I think I would go back to Luxor in Egypt and stay at the Al Moudira Hotel. I would spend my mornings exploring ancient Egyptian tombs and my afternoons sipping tea in the garden.

6. If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?

World peace and happiness for everyone would be nice, but I suppose it's not realistic. Apart from that I want my sons to be healthy, happy and fulfilled - oh and marry nice girls and have lots of children. Is that more than three - oooppps!

7. Which is one country in the world you would like to visit? Why?

Any country in Africa which has animal reserves. I love seeing animals in the wild.

8. What are you currently watching or reading?

I used to read a lot but with the advent of the Internet and especially tablets I end up reading so much on-line that I don't have time for books anymore. I really must do something about that. Watching? I'm in the middle of watching season 5 (I think) of Downtown Abbey with David. Great show but the story line is getting awfully repetitious.

9. A long lost relative leaves you a large sum of money. What do you do with it?

Help both my boys buy a house or flat. Sydney real estate prices are wicked so it would have to be a lot of money.

10. What is something you do when you need to take time for yourself?

Time for myself, you have got to be kidding, what on earth is that! I'm married to David and he is a 24/7, high maintenance husband - there is no 'myself'. Just occasionally though, usually in the days between Christmas and New Year when it is quiet, I sneak off to a corner of the garden (we have a large garden where it is easy to hide) and read a book. If I stay quiet I can read happily for hours without anyone knowing where I am.

11. Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Honestly, I don't know. I would have to ask David. I'm pretty sure he has our travel itinerary booked well into next century.

I would like to pass the award forward to the following bloggers. I apologise if any of you are bigger-name bloggers than I thought. I don't think Bloglovin is the most accurate way to gauge followers but it is all I have.

Instructions for my nominated bloggers:

If you accept the award you should answer the eleven questions asked by the person nominating you (see below). Please comment on this post with your link when you are done so I can read your answers.

In your post, link back to the person/blog who nominated you and give them a thank you shout out.

After completing the questions, nominate eleven bloggers with under 200 followers on the social media platform of your choice (I used Bloglovin) and give them eleven questions of your choice.

Notify your nominees of their nomination and provide a link to your post so they know what to do.

Your questions are:

  1. What inspired you to begin blogging?
  2. What is your blog about?
  3. What is it you love (and/or hate) about blogging?
  4. List eleven random facts about yourself.
  5. What is the best post you have ever written - the one you like most, not necessarily the most successful? You can give yourself a link here - I would love to read it.
  6. What piece of advice would you give a new blogger starting out?
  7. If you had three wishes, what would they be?
  8. What is the place you have loved visiting most in the past?
  9. If you could visit one place in the world, where would it be?
  10. What do you do, or wish you could do, when you want to indulge yourself?
  11. What makes you smile?

  1. Thanks for the nomination! I'm very jealous of your Egypt trip. How funny that with all of your combined fears, concerns etc that you still travel!

    1. Hi Jess. As long as we stay away from high places D is fine - I'm a nervous wreck most of the time.

  2. Congratulations on your Liebster Award, it is so well deserved. I love to read a bit more about the blogger behind my favourite blogs and these things give the opportunity to do just that. Also of course thank you for nominating 2 Aussie Travellers, I love your blog so I am feeling very flattered. Have a fabulous week!

  3. Thanks so much for the nomination! We did a Liebster post last year which you can check out here - http://www.thetravellinglindfields.com/2015/04/liebster-award.html.

I can really relate to some of your answers - especially the one about not letting the facts get in the way of a good story :-)

    1. Personally I think not letting the facts get in the way of a good story is the most useful skill you can have as a writer. David soooooooooooooo disagrees with me - but then hestudied history at uni where the facts are perhaps a tad more important.

  4. Thank you so much for the nomination - it is such an honor! We aren't on Bloglovin' but we do exceed the follower limit with every other social media platform, though, so I'm doubtful that I should accept. I really enjoyed learning more about you, particularly the part about being a Downton Abbey fan (something else we have in common!)

    1. Hi Betsy, Please don't feel you have to accept but do so if you would like to. I thought about checking followers for my nominees on other platforms but it was just too much work. As my son's generation would say, 'my bad'. I love reading your blog.

  5. I'm surprised you travel at all after reading your random facts Lyn. I suppose the pros far outweigh the cons though. I too would hide in a quiet corner and read a book if I could get away with it.
    Thanks for the nomination.

    1. Hi Malinda. I don't think I would travel if it wasn't for David. He has always been a keen traveller and I just tag along.
