You were lucky to get out there without troubles. I traveled South Africa first on my own and later with my partner, George. I luckily didn't have any bad experienced, although I did sometimes stupid things like driving through a township as well. If you stay away from townships and don't drive at night it's pretty safe. We have both read recently published histories of the country and I also read Mandela's autobiography. I had no idea that there was such extreme poverty there before we went.
