Juneau, Alaska

Travel Photo Tuesday

Welcome sign, Juneau Alaska
You can fly to it or you can sail to it but Juneau, Alaska is the only mainland U.S. capital which you cannot drive to. Like much of south-east Alaska, Juneau is unconnected by road to the rest of North America. In keeping with my Travel Photo Tuesday theme this post will be long on photos and short on narrative. A Steller's Jay. We came across this little fellow at the glacier. Steller's Jays are famous for their ability to imitate other birds and animals, even cats, dogs and chickens.

I had to google this guy to find out what he was. It turns out he is a porcupine.

  2. I arrived there via cruise ship, which meant I didn't have enough time to spend in Juneau. BTW, what a cute porcupine.

    1. We don't get porcupines in Australia which is why I didn't recognise what sort of animal he was at first. He did pose for the camera nicely though, don't you think.

    1. The porcupine is cute but I think our echidnas are cuter. Is 'cuter' a word - oh well it is now.

    1. That is such a lovely thing to say. I must admit I have been wondering whether posting twice a week is worth the effort but you have given me renewed enthusiasm. Thank you.

    1. I don't think Taronga Zoo in Sydney has one. I am pretty sure I had never seen one before we stumbled across this little guy.

  8. I love Alaska. We are amongst the most people you referred to who arrive via cruise ship. We didn't have enough time in Juneau to do as much as you did. Beautiful shots.

    1. There are pros and cons with cruise ships. David is not a cruise ship kind of person. I think the regimentation would literally drive him mad, but I imagine they are lovely if you want a relaxed holiday where everything is taken care of.

    1. The Aleutian Islands - wow! That would be such an adventure. David and I love visiting Islands. We lived on one for a year once, literally in the middle of nowhere. The Aleutians have never been on our wishlist but I might have a look at them.

    1. I thought he was lovely. I am not usually very good at photographing birds, they fly away just as I'm about to click but this little guy posed for me.

  15. Lyn- you have totally convinced me that I need to get up to Alaska sooner, rather than later. I am loving visiting your site each week.

  16. What a fabulous spot and great photos. How long is the walking path to the glacier?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was only about 15 minutes, less if you stepped it out. There is also a much longer path which takes you up into the forest so you look across to the glacier. We did them both on separate days.

  17. Ohh would so love to visit Alaska, so I read this with great interest. To arrive by cruise ship sounds fun. Would you have enough time to get a taste?

    1. I think the trick is to be well-organised beforehand. Make sure you know what you want to see and do and then you would get a good taste by cruise ship.

  18. I like photo posts and as I've never been to this area yours was of particular interest. I like the look of Juneau town with it's timber buildings with coloured trims. How lucky to come across the porcupine climbing a tree - I didn't know they even did that. The Steller Jay is an astounding colour!

    1. I knew nothing about porcupines and it was a real surprise to see one in a tree. I think we might have disturbed him while we were walking, although he was right next to the path, and that is why he climbed the tree, but I really don't know for sure.

  19. I wouldn't mind flying to Juneau and spending some time there (even if I do not make it to other parts of Alaska during that trip). I would go just to take a look at the glacier. I if I find a porcupine, I would be so elated.

    1. We have seen glaciers in Europe and in New Zealand but it was still a thrill to see the Mendenhall glacier. If you ever do fly to Juneau try to get to Glacier Bay as well. It is just stunning. We did a flightseeing trip over it and it was absolutely spectacular. There are some photos in this post - http://www.thetravellinglindfields.com/2015/07/juneau-alaska-mendenhall-glacier.html - and I will be posting some more in a few weeks.

  20. For a moment I was disturbed as I thought that glacier is the Aletsch glacier in Switzerland. Looks almost the same. What do you think? http://travelbug.co/2015/11/24/photo-gallery-switzerland/ #FotoFriday

    1. It does look similar, although the Mendenhall reminds me more of the glaciers in the South Island of New Zealand, The Fox and the Franz Josef Glaciers. Like the Mendenhall Glacier their ice is quite clean looking and they flow almost to sea level, making them easy to visit.
